About Meth Addiction & Recovery

Methamphetamine addiction has become one of the most tragic scourges of drug abuse today. Sometimes known as Chrissy or Tina, meth addiction can occur after only one use; a history of drug abuse is not required.

What is unusual about meth is that it generally is not known to cause a physical dependency. Rather, meth operates addictively on a person’s psychology and emotions. This often results in an even more powerful effect on the user.

It is often said that you know you have a drug abuse problem when your drug use causes problems. And you may be at risk of meth addiction if you keep using even after emotional and physical problems appear.

Over time, you may notice an increasing obsessive desire to use meth. This hold may progress to the point that, when you try to stop, you undergo bad withdrawal symptoms that make stopping very difficult. This is why most people find that the only way they can stop their meth addiction is with outside help such as a drug treatment center or rehab center.

Meth Addiction Recovery in the Gay Community

Even though meth addiction occurs across all sexual orientations, gay men and lesbians can face some unique challenges in finding drug abuse recovery support. Faced with the potential homophobia one might find in seeking recovery support, gays might not feel comfortable or safe discussing their issues, and are then unable to get to the core of their problems.

Because recovery requires absolute honesty, finding a safe place where all issues can be talked about can be very important, otherwise relapse may occur because one is afraid to share about his sexuality. Gay recovery group meeetings allow these substance abusers to be completely open and honest without having to fear judgment. Sharing is more comfortable because everyone can relate to one another and their challenges in a more personal way.

For others, a rehab center or treatment center might be the way to go. These often offer both inpatient and outpatient rehab programs so that one can find an option that works best for them. While in some cases getting away from old associates and drug abuse environments at an inpatient treatment program may be beneficial, sometimes this may not be immediately practicable. In such cases an outpatient rehab program may be the better route to recovery.
